Derek Sakakura

Derek Sakakura is thrilled to be returning to Diablo Ballet after three years away, performing the role of Taro with the internationally acclaimed show, Ulalena in Maui. A native of Walnut Creek, Mr. Sakakura trained on scholarships with Lareen Fender, Sally Streets, the San Francisco Ballet School, and the Houston Ballet Academy. His professional dance career has led him to dance with the Joffrey Ballet, the San Francisco Opera Ballet, Ballet Austin, and Ballet Met Columbus, where he has danced the leads in Balanchine's Rubies and Stars and Stripes, Puck in A Midsummer's Night Dream, the Prince in Cinderella, and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. In addition to dance, Mr. Sakakura also enjoys acting and singing.  He has toured nationally with The King and I, starring Marie Osmond and has played the role of Bernardo in Woodminster Theater's Westside Story. Most recently, he was featured as the Rescuer in Clint Eastwood's film, Hereafter. Derek would like to dedicate this season to the memory of his father, William Norio Sakakura.
